So you bought a ticket, and there’s no turning back. Here’s where you should think about staying to keep things simple!
-
Colonia San Benito / Zona Rosa
This safe neighborhood is close to several restaurants and La Zona Rosa, with local bars and restaurants nearby. It is a skip and a hop away from a few art and anthropological museums. Hell, there’s even a Tony Romas if you still dream of the 90s.
Sheraton Presidente in La Zona Rosa is a lovely option for anyone seeking more Western comforts while abroad and in the heart of La Zona Rosa. -
Antiguo Cuscatlan
This is the area where Carlos’s parents live. This location features some eco-hotels and attractive Airbnb options, situated near a local university and a couple of supermarkets. There’s even a casino nearby. At the center of the neighborhood is a park that comes alive with holiday activities, concerts, and a bazaar.
Arbol de Fuego Eco-Hotel is an eco-hotel with lush garden vibes! A quaint kitchen is on site, offering a locally sourced, organic breakfast included. Some rooms sleep 1, 2, 3, or even 4! This is a very budget-friendly option. Arbol de Fuego specializes in arranging eco-tours and maintains robust relationships with local guides. We met the owner, Carolina, and she is rad!
Hotel Alicante is the most Salvadoran choice! It has a hyper-local feel, with a charming pool in the backyard and a vibrant bar located within the hacienda-style courtyard. Breakfast is also included.
Hotel Alicante and Arbol de Fuego are within a short walking distance of the famous Antiguo winter outdoor market, local restaurants, bars, pupuserias, and supermarkets, Super Selectos and La Despensa de Don Juan.
CONSIDERATIONS
Currently, San Salvador and the surrounding areas are experiencing less crime; however, police and military presences have historically been heavy in places like Soyapango, Apopa, Mejicanos, San Marcos, and Ilopango. Avoiding these regions is the best option.
Additionally, Santa Tecla is a fun city but is an area that is best to visit during the day rather than staying there.
There are several hotels in Colonia Escalon, but this one is a bit removed from the city center. Also, the historic center has a new luxury hotel (Hotel Cardedu) but getting in and out of the center can be simple or complex based on traffic.
Lastly, Cajamarca has options, and they are beautiful, BUT, going up and down the volcano can be a chore. If you’re goal is to be up in the mountain and stay away from the hustle and bustle, this may be a good choice.
